Sleep is a powerful fat burner

Good sleep is one of the cornerstones of good health.  While 6 to 8 hours is widely accepted as the optimal amount of sleep for most adults, getting too little or even too much sleep can negatively affect your health. Sleep deprivation has become so common that many people may not even realize they are suffering from it.  Some of the serious problems that a sleep deficit can cause include: A weakened immune system Poor memory Poor concentration and mental performance Poor physical performance Stress related disorders such as heart disease, ulcers, and depression Reduced growth hormone produced (accelerating the aging process) Hunger and weight gain […]

Why I am Learning Tai Chi

I always tend to keep a fairly full schedule, and engage myself with projects and activities that excite me, but this past few months have been particularly busy.  It wasn’t until I had a chance to slow down during this Canada Day long weekend that I actually realized just how fast my life was moving.  This becomes especially apparent as I watch my daughter grow right before my eyes at what appears to be an alarming rate.  Watching her also reminds me just how important it is to treasure every moment and really be present.  You can learn a lot from watching your children. As much as I still believe that intensity is the key for getting results from your training, I also understand that this needs to be balanced with proper rest and recuperation (for your mind, body, and nervous system).  I have known for some time that I [...]

How Exercise Helps Cancer Patients Decrease Depression

A colleague of mine recently asked if he could submit a guest post to my blog related to a cause he is involved with: Living with Cancer. As some of you may already know, my father passed away from cancer at the young age of 46 (which is close to my current age). I know too many people personally who have been affected by this terrible disease, and I was more than happy to post this short message on my blog. My father had passed away from a rare form of cancer called Mesothelioma and fought it bravely, although I sometimes wish we were more knowledgeable about the different ways of coping with this illness at the time. If cancer affects you or someone you love, I hope you find this post helpful in some way, and I encourage to click on the links included if you are looking for [...]

Getting fit in 2012

By Jenny Yuen ,Toronto Sun First posted: Sunday, January 01, 2012 05:09 PM EST | Updated: Sunday, January 01, 2012 07:42 PM EST     Costa Warwar extends his arms forward and picks up the rope. He grits his teeth and strains his face as he drags 31.8 kilograms of weights across the span of the gym, not once or twice, but four times. The Toronto chef came to Fusion Fitness several months ago to deal with a weight issue. He found that he was constantly tasting different dishes at work and that often translated to packing on extra pounds. “I fell off the wagon a few years ago,” he said. “I had my first baby and I got busy with my own business and didn’t have time to catch up with my own health. I thought, if I want to be there for my daughter, then I have to [...]

New Year Fitness: Get in Top Form for 2012

Happy New Year… Another year has passed and we now have the opportunity for another fresh start! Just a few days ago I was interviewed by the Toronto SUN for a piece on New Year’s Fitness Goals. During this interview I shared what I consider to be some of the key elements for setting and achieving your health and fitness related goals for 2012. Here is the Toronto SUN article and a brief video on the SUN website with some footage from our interview: Some other New Year’s fitness suggestions I offered included: 1. You can’t out-train a bad diet.  You need to realize that exercise alone, although very important, is not enough. Your nutrition plan has to be your priority, especially if your goal is to lose some body fat and keep it off. […]

Is Cardio Really That Effective for Weight Loss?

Hello again! Spring is finally here (although you wouldn’t know from the weather we’ve been having), and everyone is looking to get leaner for the warm weather. This means it’s time to start doing more cardio for weight loss and cutting your calories way back, right? Not quite. I’d like to challenge the common belief that doing a lot of cardiovascular exercise is the best way to improve your overall fitness and to reduce body fat. But first I want to update you on how my training has been going for the Sporting Life 10K Run … which is TOMORROW! I had planned on posting more updates on my training during the week, but it’s been busy… so, better late than never. (See my previous post for more details) […]

Reboot Your Body With Muscle Activation Techniques

I was recently involved in a motor vehicle collision, and suffered minor whiplash. 5 years ago I would have been on the table of a massage therapist and / or a chiropractor, attempting to twist, pop, stretch, and rub the injury out. Not any longer. After 3 sessions with my M.A.T. practitioner, Cathy, I am back in action! MAT is a revolutionary new process that has evolved for correcting muscular imbalances in the body. It has dramatically improved functional capabilities in people of all ages, providing a pain free lifestyle along with elevating sports performance and career longevity in several professional athletes. This process is a biomechanically-based system called Muscle Activation Techniques (MAT)™. This is the same form of therapy I’ve used to successfully recover from any musculo-skeletal injury I’ve suffered over the last few years, and it has also transformed the way I train my clients. What is Muscle [...]

Fruits and Veggies: Bridging the Gap

Every health organization on the planet agrees that consuming enough vegetables and fruit in your diet is paramount to maintaining good health. Canada’s Food Guide recommends eating between 5 and 10 servings of fruits and vegetables every day. There’s a good reason for this: vegetables and fruits are among the most nutrient dense foods available, and contain important health-promoting and cancer-preventing anti-oxidants, as well as vitamins and other essential nutrients. […]
