If you’ve been following my posts and articles you already know that I usually recommend taking a high quality Fish Oil every day for its slew of health benefits as well as aiding in fat loss. However, I’ve been reading a lot lately about a superior source of essentially fatty acids and other important nutrients… I’m talking about krill oil.
Krill oil is made from krill, a small, shrimp-like crustacean that lives in the cold ocean parts of the world. Krill are very small yet make up the largest animal biomass on the planet. There are about 500 million tons of krill roaming around in the northern seas.
Similar to fish oil, krill oil has omega-3 fats (EPA and DHA) but the structure of the EPA and DHA in krill oil makes them much more absorbable than fish oil. Krill oil also contains vitamin D and powerful anti-oxidants. Therefore krill accomplishes two important nutritional goals:
- increasing intake of essential fatty acids
- increasing intake of anti-oxidants
Recently a friend of mine sent me a sample of a high-quality krill oil supplement that he carries called K48-Plus. I’ve been using it in place of fish oil for the last few weeks and although it’s subtle I do notice a difference.
The Antioxidant Potency of Krill Oil is 48 Times Higher than Fish Oil
Antioxidants are your body’s primary way to neutralize free radicals, which are harmful metabolic byproducts that damage cells and tissues throughout your body.
Scientific research has repeatedly demonstrated that antioxidants promote heart health, boost your immune system, improve your memory, and can help to slow your signs of aging.
So when you consider that the anti-oxidant potency of krill oil is 48 times more potent than fish oil, it makes it easy to choose between the two of them.
In fact, independent ORAC evaluations have also established that genuine krill oil contains:
- Over 300 times the antioxidant power of vitamin A and vitamin E
- Over 47 times the antioxidant power of lutein
- Over 34 times the antioxidant power of coenzyme Q-10
In addition, krill oil also contains astaxanthin which creates a special bond with the EPA and DHA allowing for direct metabolism of the antioxidants, making them more bioavailable.
Why K48 is different:
Ok so now we know the advantages of krill oil over fish oil… but what are the distinct benefits of K48 over other brands? I found this video on Chris’s website…

Why You Need Omega-3 From Krill Oil
In a perfect world, you would be able to get all the omega-3s you need by eating fish. Unfortunately, the vast majority of our fish supply is now so heavily contaminated with industrial pollutants and toxins like mercury, PCBs, heavy metals and radioactive poisons that I just can’t recommend it any longer.
Because it is a much smaller animal, I believe krill oil is the perfect substitute for fish consumption as krill is not plagued with the problem of heavy contamination. Being much lower on the food chain, krill simply do not accumulate the same dangerous levels of toxins as compared to other marine sources.
Here are some of the health benefits of Krill:
- Support for concentration, memory and learning
- Blood sugar health
- Healthy joints, with an increase in joint comfort
- Fighting signs of aging
- Protection for cell membranes
- Cholesterol and other blood lipid health
- Healthy liver function
- Bolstering your immune system
- Healthy mood support
- Optimal skin health
That’s a lot of benefits in one product! What I noticed myself after using krill oil for a couple of weeks was that my joints felt noticeably better and my DOMS was much less the day after a workout. I also had more energy during the day despite being on a low carb diet. I’d like to think my mental function was improved as well, but that could also be due to getting better sleep.

Great information on krill oil. But regarding your point about liver health – yes the ingredients within krill oil is great for the complete body, the liver included, but there are specifics to taking any high dose of omega-3 fatty acids that should be adhered to. Alcohol should not be drank within 4 hours of taking omega-3’s, neither should any amount of fructose sugars. This is because the liver has to work doubly as hard to move toxins out of the body, but it also puts a lot of strain because of filtering omega-3’s.
Loved the article.

Thanks for the feedback!
There is definately a lot to find out about this topic.
I love all of the points you’ve made.
