OK, I think I need to start by telling you how I got myself into this predicament…
I was speaking to one of my clients, Giselle, (who also happens to be a personal trainer, and a long distance runner) about how I don’t think long distance running is a particularly healthy way to train. I proceeded to put my foot into my mouth by claiming that I could keep up with a runner without training like one, by simply being fit and strong from following my regular strength training and interval training program. Naturally, Giselle invited me to put my “money where my mouth is” by signing up for an upcoming charity run. I said I’d think about it, which I suppose was good enough for her… because the next day I received an email confirming that I’d been signed up for the Sporting Life 10K Run on May 1st!
Thanks a lot Giselle.
Well, I’m not one to back down from a challenge, and this is definitely supporting a worthwhile cause, so it looks like I’ll be going for a run in a couple of weeks!
The Sporting Life 10K Run is raising money and awareness for Camp Oochigeas, where children diagnosed with cancer at SickKids Hospital are given the opportunity to experience the magic of camp at absolutely no cost to their families. Read more about it at CanadaRunningSeries.com . The way I look at it, on May 1st I’ll be running for ‘their’ lives.
Still, I’m NOT a runner, and this is going to take me WAY out of my comfort zone. But for that very reason I’m really looking forward to it, because I understand that to achieve success in any area of your life you must be willing to get out of your comfort zone! It will also give me an opportunity to prove a point (hopefully), that if absolutely necessary, I can keep up with runners without spending hours running every week. Admittedly, I’m beginning to question myself as the date quickly approaches! (But what the heck… it’s only ten kilometers, right?).
But I’m not dumb… I’ll be doing a little running over the next few days to prepare my body for the event. I plan on bringing my video camera along to record the spectacle, so I’ll share any footage I get with you along the way!
Wish me luck!
Josh
Btw, I’ll be posting an article soon about the problems with prolonged cardio training (just to add insult to injury, lol!)
good luck Josh! I wouldn’t recommend running it in your vibrams just yet unless you’ve gotten a fair bit of time in them. What are the conditions of your dare? Do you have to finish in under 60 min?
Hey Craig,
I was thinking about the Vibrams, but after going for a 30 minute jog in them my knees don’t feel great, so I picked up a new pair of Nike Free Runners… still allow for some natural foot mobility but have some cushioning. My feet aren’t ready for the barefoot impact yet.
I said I could do it in under an hour… that’s if I can keep up a jogging pace for the entire 10 K. I need to learn to keep my mouth shut, LOL! Well, I feel good about the cause, and if I … wait… and WHEN I successfully complete this run I will chalk one up for the strength athletes! (o:
Hey Josh,
Good job on calling out a distance runner (btw im being sarcastic). That was pretty funny to read. Looking forward to reading how you did.

Thanks Robbie! I’m looking forward to seeing how I do as well, lol.
I’d watch that video! How can we sponsor you?
Hey Lynn,
Thanks… I’m not sure how to get sponsored, but I’m sure there is info on the site (the link is in the post above). I’ll look into it further.
Time to go for another run! (Never thought I’d hear myself say that…)

Posted on incredible, that was a very good read. In ocsclunion, someone who actually thinks and understands what they are blogging about. Quite difficult to find of late, especially on the web . I bookmarked your web blog and will make sure to keep coming back here if this is how you always write. thank you, keep it up! .
Thanks for the feedback Santosh! Much appreciated!
I once ran a 10k in under 60 minutes, I didn’t have to jog the whole time, there were times when I walked. You should be able to do it, it’s mostly about pain.
Posted on I’ve been absent for a while, but now I rmmbeeer why I used to love this site. Thanks , I will try and check back more frequently. How frequently you update your web site?
Welcome back… I aim to post every week or 2 right now.
haha. reminds of a recent episode of BULLY BEATDOWN where a REALLY muscular guy thought
he could take on an MMA fighter and last 5 min in the cage (He tapped out 5 times in 3 min)
GOOD LUCK!! at least it’s “only” 10K and not a full marathon. again-best of luck! will be looking for the followup on this one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
John
LOL! Ya, that’s how I feel! Thanks for the props… I’ll do my best to earn points for the ‘strength athletes’! (o:
The good news is I ran 9K yesterday to train, and did it in about 50 minutes… no problems except for sore calves and tired legs today.
I’ll post a vid of it this week…
